The Department of Public Economics at the Max Planck Institute for Tax Law and Public Finance regularly invites applications for scholarships for doctoral students. The Institute grants these scholarships to excellent students. The successful applicants are expected to pursue their research at the Max Planck Institute and to participate in the Munich Graduate School of Economics (MGSE) of the Department of Economics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU), Munich.
Ph.D. students who already acquired skills in a graduate programme, or passed parts of a Ph.D. programme at other departments or institutes may apply at any time.
New entrants into the Ph.D. programme have to apply before April 15 2012 for the academic year that starts in October of the same year.
The graduate programme is structured as a three-year programme. The scholarships provided by Max Planck Institute usually cover the full time period of the programme, contingent on successful completion of the exams in the first year.
In the first year, the programme provides its young academics with formal course-based training in the field of economics and econometrics. Students acquire a solid background needed for the participants to complete their doctoral thesis. All courses are taught in English.
In the second and third year, doctoral students focus on their respective research projects and write their thesis. The Institute provides an adequate research environment, office facilities and financial resources for conducting this research. Young academics benefit from being part of a team that includes more senior researchers who also advise Ph.D. students in their research efforts. Doctoral students regularly present their research progress within seminars and discuss their results with more senior scholars at the Institute.
During the programme, Ph.D. students are part of an international team of researchers at the Institute. For the exchange and discussion of scientific ideas, the Institute strongly supports the participation in national and international conferences, symposia, and seminars. The Department also regularly hosts a considerable number of international scholars who contribute to the intellectually inspiring atmosphere and organizes several focussed research conferences every year.
